Fall PDF 08 Dog Control Proposal by Lynda Del Genis PDF Print E-mail

Project Proposal July 12, 2008  Prepared for: PDF Planning Meeting
Prepared by: Lynda Del Genis
lynda.delgenis@gmail

Proposal number: DOG Objective
To establish a policy allowing dogs to attend PDF
Goals: Address safety concerns while remaining within the spirit of the event
Solution: While it’s obvious that firm guidelines and policies must be established regarding owner responsibility and personal safety, it must be done in accordance with the spirit of controlled anarchy that informs other aspects of PDF. Therefore, we must appeal to the owner’s sense of citizenship, rather than take punitive meas-
ures against them. I propose the following:
• All people wishing to bring dogs to PDF apply for a permit when they purchase their ticket. There is no additional cost for this permit, but you must have one in order to bring your dog to PDF. No burner dogs without permits will be admitted to PDF. All dog owners receiving a permit are required to volunteer at the dog station at least one shift.
• The permit application will list the rules and expectations of having a dog at PDF. It will clearly explain why these rules and expectations are established. It will also acknowledge the presence of other unleashed,non-Burner dogs at the VVMC, and stipulate the control of PDF dogs is mandatory, both regarding VVMC
dogs, and other PDF dogs. The original signed permit will be kept on file at the dog station. This file will be maintained and archived by the Dog Coordinator, who will administer permits and the PDF dog station.
• A special dog station is established within PDF (centrally located, near the pavilion) manned by at least one volunteer. Photos of all dogs and their owners will be posted at this station for purposes of identification. A list of all permit holders will also be at this station. This station will be equipped with water, poopie bags, biscuits, and chew toys. Registered dog owners may leave their dogs at this station when they need to use the portalet, shower, engage in dog-unfriendly activity, etc. This station will be attended by dog permit holders as well as other attendees. A list of volunteers who have already stepped forward pledging their support follows; since the call for volunteers was made only a few days ago, I expect this list will grow significantly in the weeks and months leading to Fall PDF:
• Sherri Sosslau
• Sean Gee
• Julieanne Shargel
• Scorpio
• Spanquee
• Lucifer
• J. Bristol
• Penny
• Elanna
• Andrzej
• Jenn
• The dog permit, an ID tag or collar, will be worn by the dog at all times inside the event. Additionally, the registered owner(s) will also be given an ID bracelet identifying them as a dog-owner and cross referencing the dog’s ID number. Dog owners who find the permit process too bureaucratic will not bother to apply for one. This will eliminate those owners unwilling to take responsibility for their dogs. Likewise, anyone who does not agree with the expectations set forth in the permit application will not receive one, and will therefore not be permitted to bring their dog to PDF.
